New Mexico’s Next Step Plan requirement is one of the most important things a district can get right, but with everything counselors have to keep track of, also one of the easiest to let slip through the cracks. What the NSP Actually Requires

Every New Mexico student needs a Next Step Plan, completed every year from 8th grade through senior year.

Career exploration. Students explore career options as part of building their plan.
Goal setting. Students set academic, career, and personal goals.
Pathway alignment. Each plan must align to the student’s own school district or charter school’s Graduate Profile.
Three signatures, every year. Every plan must be signed by the student, a parent or guardian, and a school counselor or official, five separate times across a student’s high school years.

Tracking the NSP across hundreds of students over five years, including collecting all three signatures, is a monumental task for a counselor. And it’s where things most often fall through the cracks.
