Career Exploration Starts in Middle School. Here’s Why That Matters in Oklahoma

Oklahoma’s ICAP requirement formally begins in high school. However, many districts are choosing to introduce it in 6th and 7th grade, using the Oklahoma Career Guide, so a 9th grader’s first real ICAP isn’t built from a blank page. Level All’s Career Finder is built to support that same early start, everywhere, for free.

‍

One Tool. Used for Years, Not Just One Afternoon.

Level All’s Career Finder and career assessment aren’t a one-time exercise. They’re built to be revisited year after year, matching how Oklahoma’s own ICAP is designed to work.

  • Middle school. The assessment helps a student start identifying interests and strengths well before their ICAP process formally begins in high school.
  • Building the ICAP. Results feed directly into a student’s plan, so goal-setting and coursework alignment start from real exploration, not guesswork.
  • Choosing a pathway. Career Finder surfaces real Oklahoma career and technology programs matched to what a student is actually drawn to.
  • After high school. The same foundation feeds directly into planning for college, an apprenticeship, or the workforce.

‍

Coach Tip:

Most career assessments are built to be taken once. Level All’s is built to grow with a student from their first year of middle school exploration through their final ICAP update in senior year.

‍

Why This Matters in Oklahoma

  • The strongest districts already start early. Introducing ICAP concepts in 6th and 7th grade is common practice, but it isn’t universal.
  • Oklahoma’s own numbers make the case. Three out of four Oklahoma jobs are projected to require education or training beyond high school. Early, real exploration is what gets a student ready for that, not a decision made cold in 9th grade.
  • A discovery problem, not an opportunity problem. Oklahoma’s career and technology programs already exist. The gap is making sure every student finds out about them before their ICAP process starts.

‍

Built to Connect the Dots

  • From interest to pathway. A student exploring an interest in health sciences in middle school arrives at their first real ICAP already knowing what to build on.
  • For counselors. Fewer students showing up to their ICAP process with nothing to add, and more walking in with real, specific interests already explored.

‍

Oklahoma’s ICAP asks a 9th grader to set real goals. Career exploration that starts in middle school is what makes those goals mean something.
