Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools runs one of the most robust school choice systems in North Carolina, letting families apply to magnet and specialized programs across the district as well as to their assigned high school. But many families might not know the full range of options on the table.

More Options Than Most Families Realize

CMS families may have more options than they realize.

Magnet programs. CMS offers Montessori schools, STEAM academies, and Dual Language Immersion programs in five different languages, options that would otherwise cost thousands in private school tuition.
Early and Middle College. Through partnerships with Central Piedmont Community College and UNC Charlotte, students can start earning college credit in high school.
But you have to meet the window. Families can apply to up to three schools during the School Choice lottery, which runs each fall.
The real problem. It isn’t a lack of options. It’s that families don’t know how to find out their options or navigate the process.

CMS divides all available School Choice seats into three socioeconomic status categories, high, medium, and low, based on each student’s home address, to promote diversity across every program. Students already enrolled in a magnet program are guaranteed a seat in the next grade level, and siblings of enrolled students receive priority too.
