Michigan’s Educational Development Plan requirement is one of the most important things a district can get right. But with everything that counselors have on their plates, it’s also one of the easiest things to let slip through the cracks. What the EDP Actually Requires

Under Michigan’s Revised School Code, every student must have the opportunity to develop an Educational Development Plan starting in grade 7, with the chance to review and revise it every year through grade 12.

A talent portfolio, required since 2018. Starting in grade 7, students build a record of experiences, proficiencies, certifications, and accomplishments that demonstrate marketable skills, revised through grade 12.
Educational preparation goals. The plan identifies the level and type of education needed to reach a student’s chosen career goals.
Parent consultation. Parents should have the opportunity to review and agree with their student’s plan.
