The Grant That Puts Nearly Any Public University Within Reach

Most families think a DC student is stuck choosing between DC-area schools or paying full out-of-state tuition everywhere else. The DC Tuition Assistance Grant (DCTAG) changes that math entirely.

What DCTAG Actually Covers

  • Up to $10,000 a year, $50,000 over six years, toward the gap between in-state and out-of-state tuition, at any of 300+ participating public colleges nationwide.
  • Up to $3,750 a year at DC-area private colleges and HBCUs anywhere in the country.
  • Six years or the lifetime maximum, whichever comes first, and it must be claimed annually, it doesn’t renew itself.

It’s Already Worked

DCTAG has been credited with helping push DC’s college attendance rate well above the national average since it launched, serving thousands of DC students and directing hundreds of millions of dollars toward tuition over the life of the program.

Pairs with the Pay Less for College Journey

  • Every dollar of aid, tracked. The Journey makes sure a family claims DCTAG alongside the FAFSA, scholarships, and any other aid, rather than assuming one form covers it.
  • Real cost, not sticker price. Families calculate what a school actually costs, DCTAG included, before ruling it out.
  • A four-year plan, not a senior-year scramble. Since DCTAG must be claimed annually, staying on top of it becomes part of an ongoing plan, not a one-time application.

Coach Tip:

The DC OneApp application period runs February through August. Point families to it as early as possible, since DCTAG funds are disbursed per semester and a late start can mean missing that first payout entirely.
