The Tool That Saves Your Students Thousands on College

The Alaska Performance Scholarship got a major upgrade in June 2024. Award amounts went up at every level, the test score requirement became optional, and students now have eight years to use the award instead of six. For an Alaska student who plans ahead, that can mean up to $28,000 over four years at an Alaska college or approved career and technical program.

What the APS Pays Now

Students qualify by meeting a GPA target or a test score target, not both.

Level Per year GPA Or ACT / SAT / WorkKeys
Level 1 Up to $7,000 3.5 25 / 1210 / 18
Level 2 Up to $5,250 3.0 23 / 1130 / 15
Level 3 Up to $3,500 2.5 21 / 1060 / 12

Every level also requires the APS high school curriculum and a completed FAFSA. Students who raise their GPA after two semesters of full-time college can step up to a higher award level.

The Alaska Education Grant

For students with financial need, the Alaska Education Grant typically adds $500 to $4,000 a year. Funding is limited, so students who file the FAFSA earlier will have the best chance at the biggest pool of aid.

How the Pay Less for College Journey Helps

  • Know the target early. Students see exactly what each APS level requires, years before it counts.
  • Plan the curriculum. Students map the required APS courses into their four-year plan, including world language, Alaska Native language, fine arts, cultural heritage, or CTE options.
  • Stack the aid. Students learn how APS combines with the Alaska Education Grant, federal aid, and other scholarships.
  • Compare real costs. Students weigh Alaska colleges and training programs side by side, with APS factored in.

Coach Tip:

The gap between Level 3 and Level 2 is $1,750 a year, which adds up to $7,000 over four years. For a student sitting near a 3.0 GPA, one stronger semester can be worth real money. And because the test score is now an alternative, a student who tests well can qualify even with a lower GPA.
